Mesoscale Motions in Oceanic Stratus as Revealed by Satellite Data

چکیده
Over maritime areas, meteorological satellite data generally havc been used only in the study of synoptic scalc systems. Howcvcr, TIROS 7 pictures of summcrtimc stratus ovcr thc northcrn Pacific, whcn rcctified and combiiicd with mesosealc radiation analyses, give valuablc clucs regarding the mcsoscalc dynamics of thc lower atmosphcrc. Radiation data distinguish stratus from middlc lcvcl cloud laycrs. Stratus bands, averaging 13 km. widc and oricntcd 16' t o the left of thc geostrophic mind, arc thought to bc related to horizontal roll vorticcs. Rcflectancc cross scctions across thcsc bands iiidicatc sharp variations in thc thiekncss of thc stratus. Precisely gridded photographs show thc relation of marked clear areas in thc stratus to thc topography of lhc Aleutian Islands. Only wlicii cxcccding a critical sizc do isolated mountainous islands producc clcar wakes. Oiic island appears to bc shedding a possiblc vortex strcct. A derived modcl for the flow of thc stable air ovcr long mountain ridges in the Alcutians includcs such phcnomcna as upstrcam blocking, windward slopc bolstcr cddics, and cxtrcmc turbulent mixing on the lcc slopes causing clcar areas to cxtend ovcr 100 km. downstream. Radiosonde data indicatc that the mixed laycr downstream is approxirnatcly lhc depth of thc obstructing ridgc.

Analysis of updraft velocity in mesoscale convective systems using satellite and WRF model simulations
Updraft vertical velocity is an important dynamical quantity which is strongly related to storm intensity and heavy precipitation. It can be calculated by direct observations, NWP model, and geostationary satellites which can provide the possibility of measuring this quantity with high temporal resolution. This research analyzed updraft velocity based on six derived parameters from INSAT3-D and...
متن کاملOn the influence of surface heterogeneity on latent heat fluxes and stratus properties
A mesoscale atmospheric model is used to examine the three-dimensional structure and evolution of low extended stratus over various synthetic landscapes of different heterogeneity in mid-latitudes in spring. The simulation results substantiate that surface heterogeneity nonlinearly influences the distributions of latent heat fluxes, vertical motions, and cloud-water presupposed the length of th...
متن کامل15 Years of Satellite Altimetry and Mesoscale Ocean Dynamics
The paper provides a review of recent results on mesoscale ocean dynamics derived from satellite altimetry. Since 1992, we have had an unprecedented 15 year high-resolution monitoring of the ocean mesoscale field. Altimetry is often used in mesoscale studies in synergy with other remote sensing techniques and in-situ data. This global, high-resolution data set has allowed oceanographers to quan...
متن کاملOceanic mass transport by mesoscale eddies.
Oceanic transports of heat, salt, fresh water, dissolved CO2, and other tracers regulate global climate change and the distribution of natural marine resources. The time-mean ocean circulation transports fluid as a conveyor belt, but fluid parcels can also be trapped and transported discretely by migrating mesoscale eddies. By combining available satellite altimetry and Argo profiling float dat...
متن کاملObserved 3D Structure, Generation, and Dissipation of Oceanic Mesoscale Eddies in the South China Sea
Oceanic mesoscale eddies with horizontal scales of 50-300 km are the most energetic form of flows in the ocean. They are the oceanic analogues of atmospheric storms and are effective transporters of heat, nutrients, dissolved carbon, and other biochemical materials in the ocean. Although oceanic eddies have been ubiquitously observed in the world oceans since 1960s, our understanding of their t...
